The device itself is rock solid. Like most current-gen HTC devices, it’s built like a tank, and feels like it could withstand some serious abuse (though naturally it’s purdy enough that you’d never want to test that theory). It’s not without fault though; the select and back keys are dangerously close, causing jump-backs from apps a little too frequently. The touch-strip HTC originally envisioned for the Excalibur has been replaced with a touch-sensitive volume keys, which are horrid for in-call use without pulling the phone away from your head. No tactility — no good.

The keyboard, arguably the most important aspect of this device, is so-so. It does have good tactility, but our unit didn’t register all our keypresses when we were typing quickly (and that’s not due to the usual Smartphone two-keys-at-once bug). The spacebar is a bit irksome, as depressing the right side (with our right thumb) would often yield the opposite of what we just mentioned: a space, but no feedback (thus causing us to hit space more than once between words). The addition of AKU3 in this phone gives it XT9 support (which is as useful as it is irritating), as well as hold-down alt keys. The XT9 predictive text engine for QWERTY devices would be welcome if it came with some easy mechanism for turning it on and off, but sadly it does not — this was confirmed with a number of other Dash users. Our Dash’s XT9 would turn on for entering addressees in emails, but would mysteriously turn off when moving to the subject or body fields. Despite a few resets, the problem persisted; it’s impossible to engage and disengage at will, something we’re hoping they’ll fix sooner than later.

On the other hand, hold-down alt keys is a newish feature we can’t live without. Instead of hitting alt and dialing a key to get its alternate character (say, alt-l for $), just hold down l for a sec and $ just shows up. Unless you’re really into typing llllllllllllll… you’ll be happy that now you don’t have to hit that alt key as much. We thought it was a bit of a bummer that the only key to engage the camera is slyly placed to the right of the space bar — not terribly obvious when most devices have side-mounted camera buttons to more quickly and intuitively engage one of the device’s most used features.

……..The Nokia E90 Communicator is the latest addition to the set of contemporary high-performance devices for executives. We had to wait three years since the last Nokia 9500 Communicator appeared. Our patience was duly rewarded at the 2007 3GSM Congress, when Nokia unveiled the ultimate no-compromise mobile communication device. It remains faithful to some of the family traditions, others it forsakes, but the outcome is downright worth it. Nokia E90 has the familiar body construction: a hefty handset, which opens up to reveal a wide landscape display.

Before the E90 appeared, communicators used to be a class on its own in the Nokia portfolio. They had their own UI, which brought forth a number of issues. Above all, every application had to be adapted to the uncommon S80 UI. Quite unaffordable and therefore rare, communicators were ostracized by software developers. That’s exactly the flaw, which has been addressed in the new Nokia E90. The phone features a standard Symbian 9.2 and 3rd edition S60, working on a giant display and ensuring far greater compatibility.

In closed position E90 looks like a traditional, though well oversized, Nokia bar. For the lack of a better reference point for size and weight, we compare it against the older Nokia 9500. The newer release has notably reduced size and still packs in near full contemporary functionality. The table below compares the essential features of the last two Communicator generations.

Size is the first thing you’ll have to put up with about the Nokia E90. And it may as well be the last. What you get is unmatched keypad space and display size.

The Nokia N96 is a multi-functional smart phone that is designed to fully integrate mobile communication with the use of the phone for entertainment purposes. The major point of interest that makes this new phone so appealing is that it has advanced video and camera capabilities that are unlike those seen in previous generations of smartphones. In addition to these video capabilities, this phone has taken music playing, Internet connectivity and GPS features to the next level. It is also notable that the new design makes it an efficient phone to use and one that’s user-friendly despite how advanced the features of this phone may be. It’s priced around 550 Euros and is due for release in the upcoming weeks. (source of article from http://www.dialaphone.co.uk)

In conclusion, Eldar wrote the Nokia N85 is an ideal replacement for those tired of the Nokia N95. With the price at 450 euros in Europe, you get the most for your money compared to a Nokia N96 or the competitor Samsung INNOV8. He thinks the Nokia N85 will be one of the best phones in the market… until February 2009 when Nokia releases two breakthrough devices! The N85 is expected to ship in October.
This followup to the MBW-100 comes in three styles (Classic, Music, and Executive, pictured left to right) that all perform the standard caller ID / SMS notification thing, while tossing in the highly-desirable ability to change tracks and adjust volume as well as view track info on the face. No pricing or release details were immediately released.
